Opportunities for using waste heat from processing organic residues

Processing organic residues using anaerobic digestion (AD) and gasification produces biogas/syngas, both of which can be used in a gas engine, combined heat and power (CHP) unit to generate electricity and waste heat. About half the CHP waste heat can be recovered as 70- 800C hot water and half as low pressure steam. Additional heat can also be obtained from other process equipment used within the organic residue processing facility. Heat produced by the
CHP unit can be used for a variety of purposes, including drying crops, drying woody biomass/solid digestate for use as a boiler fuel or animal bedding; greenhouse heating; hot water to wash down a diary unit; domestic/commercial heating; fuelling an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) unit to generate additional electricity. Some examples are provided of how waste heat from processing organic residues can be utilised.
