United Utilities has recently concluded (in truth not quite yet) a study into reasons for extreme poor performance at its inlet works – this has included a survey of all the UK Water Cos (and practices in Northern Europe) and so they are aware of our study;
This has identified shortcomings and deficiencies in the way inlet screens are sized and designed, some specific to United Utilities, while others could have implications for the whole industry;
A lack of suitable operation and maintenance was also identified and the measures required to improve matters are outlined;
