Willow plantations and constucted wetlands have been adopted overseas, particularly in Scandinavia, to provide combined wastewater polishing and enhanced production of biomass. In the UK, there has been little uptake of this approach.

We describe the process of establishing a Willow/wastewater project in conjunction with Scottish Water, in order to demonstrate the potential of this approach in Scotland, towards more sustainable, energy neutral wastewater treatment.

Initial observations and water quality data from two tidal flow constructed wetlands operated in parallel, one planted with Phragmites australis and one with Salix viminalis, will be presented. Opportunities and constraints of this approach will be discussed.
