UK water companies have and continue to install new plant to meet tightened phosphorus consent limits. These largely incorporate chemical dosing and technology to remove the solids generated. To meet and maintain compliance levels, operators, process scientists and managers will need to understand the principals of chemical dosing, the impact upon the treated wastewater (e.g. in terms of alkalinity consumption, chemical breakthrough) and the actions that can be taken to optimise.
In addition, larger sites will in the future see P consents and this will drive investment in Biological Phosphorus Removal and nutrient recovery.
This course works through each aspect of chemical and biological treatment, reviews proprietary technologies and provides attendees with the basis to develop control and optimisation strategies for their sites.
To understand the factors influencing chemical and biological phosphorus removal. This includes worked examples on calculating chemical dose rates, solids removal and proprietary technologies and configuring activated sludge plants for biological phosphorus removal. Nutrient recovery technologies will also be discussed.
Learning is delivered through a combination of lectures, case studies and worked examples.

Matt has been in wastewater and sludge for twenty years and works with water companies, industry and waste producers to develop and implement solutions. He’s been delivering courses on tertiary and advanced wastewater treatment for several years and has now focused this course to reflect the increasing importance of phosphorus. He championed Aqua Enviro’s 2017 event, ‘The Big P’, which saw the findings of the Chemical Investigation Programme presented and has worked on numerous projects to evaluate the environmental benefit and costs of phosphorus removal and recovery.

Maryam obtained her PhD in the field of Anaerobic Digestion. Since joining Aqua Enviro she has undertaken technical reviews on phosphorus and nitrogen recovery technologies from liquor returns. As part of Aqua Enviro’s Technical Team, she leads our BioWin modelling service, which includes biological phosphorus removal optioneering.
