Introduction
This one day event will attempt to highlight the problems with the current ideology related to pesticides in water. Individual pesticides have unique properties, and many variable factors determine the specific risk in terms of water pollution and these include the half-life; mobility in soil and solubility in water: Many pesticides are fairly soluble in water so that they can be applied with water and be absorbed by the target. The higher the solubility of the pesticide, the higher the risk of leaching. Residual herbicides are generally of lower solubility to aid soil binding but their persistency in the soil can cause other problems.
The following issues will also be considered: -
- Should the 0.1 ug/litre blanket (one size fits all) EU limit be challenged and replaced with a USEPA risk based approach with individual values for each approved pesticide? For products based upon metaldehyde and glyposate this could make orders of magnitude differences in permitted concentrations
- The issues of cost and carbon footprint of pesticide removal strategies from water
- Food security versus use of pesticides in relation to population predicted increase
- Screening of pesticides as used in routine food analysis versus targeted analysis for targeted routine water analysis?
- Technical innovations and future pesticide use and dealing with the challenge
Who should attend?
- Water companies operational and laboratory staff
- Pesticide manufacturers
- Agricultural community
- Environmental consultants
- Regulators
